Desktop Virtualization
The virtual desktop - the solution to many problems
The desire for desktop virtualization is due to the high cost of administration of individual PC systems. Especially companies with a decentralized organizational structure carry strong interest in simplifying the management of their desktop infrastructure.
With the help of Desktop virtualization IT administrators can deploy virtual desktops in the data centre on servers and manage them centrally. The users do not feel the difference and continue working as usual.
Central, yet flexible
In a virtual desktop (VDI) the same happens as in server virtualization: the operating system and the applications will be separated by a hypervisor from the physical hardware in the data center / server room. Arround 75 guests can share the resources of the virtual server hardware. Each user has a separate desktop (virtual machine) instead of a shared desktop.
A virtual desktop is recommended primarily for load-intensive applications and applications that can not be run on a shared desktop.
Centralizing the desktops and the data has the following advantages:
- significantly reduced costs for administration
- fast response time for changes (updates, migrations ...)
- high data security, since no data will leave the data center
- "Arbitrary" and rapid scalability
- significant increase in the availability of a desktop
- lower power consumption
- suitable for almost all applications
Always and everywhere available
Because of the minimum requirements of the terminal, all modern devices can be used to access the virtual desktop. From smart phones, tablets and thin clients to zero clients. Also existing computer systems can be used as well.
To access a virtual desktop usually a bandwidth of 30 Kbps(half ISDN speed) is needed.
