The opening ceremony on May 31, 2008 marked the completion of a signifi cant and extensive project for the Swiss National Park: after a planning and building phase stretching over 6 years, the new National Park Centre in Zernez was fi nally complete. Offering enough space for up to 250 visitors, the exhibition centre required terminals to serve as information points. Numerous PCs from different providers were tested but the Mini PC developed by transtec proved most convincing. The Mini PC, SENYO 610, is one of the smallest PCs on the market. Weighing just 1.3 kilograms and measuring just 17.2 centimetres in length and 4.2 centimetres in height, it is similar in size to a CD drive. At 20 dBA, noise emission is whisper quiet. Despite its compact exterior, the SENYO 600 doesn’t lag behind other standard desktop PCs in terms of performance. The Mini PC managed to meet all the requirements of the new National Park Centre where visitors want to stay and fi nd out information without being disturbed.

The project also involved the National Park Centre integrating two transtec PROVIGO storage systems for their internal IT needs which run in a Unix environment with transtec servers. To leverage maximum availability, the data is mirrored between both systems.
„We will defi nitely work together with transtec in the future and are already planning virtualising our servers. Being a solutions provider, transtec can provide the required virtualisation know-how. I’ve been impressed by transtec and appreciate the fast and reliable support which is vital with complex projects and installations. The fi rst pilot tests should start in Spring 2010,“

explains Christoph Mühlethaler, IT manager.

The Company The Solution Customer opinion
HanseVision GmbH, founded in Hamburg in 1999, advises customers on how to optimise their business processes by applying modern information technology (IT). The aim is to consolidate competitive advantages already gained on the market and generate new ones. High-performance and sustainable IT not only increases productivity but also helps to reduce costs in the long term.Depending on each customer’s requirements, the IT service provider puts together a project team which provides the customer with optimum support in task-solving strategies. HanseVision GmbH is supported by 100 IT experts and can thus offer optimum service for a wide variety of requirements. The company is a Gold Certified Partner and specialises in Microsoft solutions with particular focus on SharePoint, BizTalk and Commerce Server Technology from Microsoft. With the upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with transtec Storage Servers as central IP-SAN storage system, HanseVision can move virtual machines in operation onto other physical servers. The IT service provider has thus managed to increase the availability of its server systems. Since the upgrade to the new server operating system, these server systems can also be serviced while running. By integrating Microsoft System Center Technologies, HanseVision can also ensure flexible system utilisation: Administration tools support the IT service provider in sharing system resources and proactively monitoring system utilisation. Vulnerabilities can be detected in advance and troubleshooted rapidly with live migration. “The system works stable and fast with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. It offers live migration of virtual machines and desktop virtualisation using tools without HanseVision having to buy applications from others. Virtual machines can be transferred in real time to a host that has free resources available. This makes our systems safer, saves on electricity costs and rises the availability.”

According to Lorenz Goebel, CEO of HanseVision GmbH.

The Company The Solution Customer opinion
TetraTec Instruments develops flexible measurement systems for measuring the pressure, flow and temperature of gases. The SMB from Steinenbronn in the South West of Germany provides services in the field of calibration in its own laboratory as well as externally and employs 22 workers. The aim of the IT restructure was to increase server stability and service reliability as well as providing new resources for test environments faster. The implementation of a central and convenient system management concept cuts running costs. TetraTec opted for a virtualisation solution from transtec. Following intensive consultation meetings with transtec, a VMware active/passive system with a redundant, external iSCSI SAN storage system was installed at TetraTec Instruments.
With the „boot-from-SAN“ concept, the servers boot the operating system by iSCSI host bus adapter directly from the central storage system. The total costs of ownership could be reduced by configuring the VMware Servers without hard drives and RAID controller. To increase availability, a second VMware ESX virtualisation server was installed. In the event of a hardware problem on the main server, this second server can manually start the ESX installation via the „boot-from-SAN“ in no time.
“To fully utilise the benefits of virtualisation, system administrators must have specific understanding. transtec convinced us of their expertise especially due to the consultation and services they provided. There is always a contact person ready to deal with any problems. Due to the successful collaboration with transtec, TetraTec has already purchased more workstation PCs from transtec and we will work with transtec again in the future.“

Ullrich von Bassewitz, software engineer and IT manager at TetraTec.
