750 million e-mails on 18 cm
transtec PROVIGO 550 SUMO SATA RAID offers a 48 TB memory capacity on a minimum amount of space10.26.2007 – With the PROVIGO 550 SUMO SATA RAID, transtec AG has launched a storage system on the market that delivers 48 terabytes on four units (almost 18 centimetres) in the rack. The Tübingen-based supplier of customised hardware solutions has managed to double the storage density of other standard models. It will give companies sufficient capacity to store 750 million e-mails, whilst utilising a minimum of space. This is the equivalent of archiving 10 years of e-mails from 2,000 employees. This immediately available model offers other benefits such as upgradeability, user-friendly operation and a data availability that delivers triple the protection thanks to the completely redundant architecture, RAID-6 security and snapshots.
The demand for storage space has been increasing consistently for years: In a recent study from March 2007, market researchers from IDC ascertained that the capacity of external storage systems has increased fourfold since 2003, and this includes an increase of 59% in the previous year alone (source: IDC, Western European Disk Storage Systems Trends & Analysis). The SUMO SATA RAID from transtec handles capacity bottlenecks with 48 terabytes storage space in four height units (U) whereby doubling the storage density of standard RAID systems. This compact heavyweight from transtec enables IT managers to accommodate almost half a petabyte of storage space in a 19-inch cabinet.
These types of storage quantities need an active cooling system in the 19-inch cabinet, for example in the form of a 1 U ventilator insert in the upper section of the rack. Other cooling requirements are not needed due to the optimised air flow in the RAID.

Storing the e-mails of 2,000 employees for 10 years
For example, the e-mails of two thousand employees can be archived on SUMO SATA RAID and secured for one decade, or, put another way, eighty thousand digital X-ray images can be stored over thirty years. Besides video-on-demand and IP-TV or post production in film editing, video applications can also profit from the high storage density, cost efficiency and high-availability. It can also be applied in archiving and data security. Compliance and e-mail archives have sufficient bandwidth, as does backup-to-disk and data replication in the storage network (Storage Area Network, SAN).Deliberate cost calculation
The compact design of the PROVIGO 550 SUMO SATA RAID allows companies to save on surface space in the data centre. The tool less top loader mechanical system and special heavy-duty rails do not only make cabinet installation easier, they also make future servicing less time consuming enabling costs to be lowered. These types of storage quantities need an active cooling system in the 19-inch cabinet, for example in the form of a 1 U ventilator insert in the upper section of the rack. Other cooling requirements are not needed due to the optimised air flow in the RAID.
Optimised availability
Several safety features are used to secure data. The high-availability architecture has a fully-redundant design, has active/active RAID controllers and RAID-6 protection against double hard-drive failures. Ventilation and power supply are designed with triple redundancy. And up to 512 incremental point-in-time snapshots (optional) with Microsoft VSS support enable IT managers to regularly store the respective data during a running operation.Details at a glance
