transtec launches PROVIGO 200 miniature SAN

Thanks to Z-SAN™ technology the PROVIGO 200 miniature SAN, the smallest of its type in the world, sets new performance records at a very attractive price

Tübingen, 15 December, 2006 – The economical transtec PROVIGO 200 mini-SAN storage powerhouse brings the benefits of SAN to private individuals, the self-employed and small businesses. Based on Storage-over-IP (SoIP), the next generation of LAN-based storage technology, the PROVIGO 200 is faster, offers better scalability and is more affordable than comparable iSCSI or NAS file-sharing solutions. Its small form-factor and whisper-quiet operation make it ideal for desktop use. Set-up requires a mere ten minutes. No special knowledge is required – it is only necessary to connect LAN cables and a network adapter.

The PROVIGO 200 base model with terabyte capacity costs 449 GBP. It will be deliverable to end customers in January, 2007. A terabyte permits, for example, physicians to store 15,000 ultrasonic scans or 180 X-rays (DICOM3) and retrieve them in less than a second, home video enthusiasts are able to archive 300 movies in DVD quality, and graphic artists to create an archive of 50,000 print-quality images.

SoIP allows direct communication between hard drives and computers over an IP-based Ethernet network, making the CPU-intensive encapsulation of SCSI commands employed, for example, in iSCSI, a thing of the past. Likewise, no RAID controllers or special adapters are needed - in the case of SoIP the network manages write operations, effectively taking the place of a RAID controller.

Among the advanced features of the PROVIGO 200 mini-SAN is the use of the Z-FS™ global file system, which supports multiple concurrent read/write operations, thus laying the foundation for NAS file sharing. In addition, up to three PROVIGO 200 systems can be interconnected to form a storage cluster in which logical drives and RAID sets spanning multiple storage units can be created. This boosts both capacity and performance and also permits mirroring two remote systems to create a high-availability mini-SAN.
