First transtec servers based on AMD Opteron™

Servers offer ideal introductory basis into 64-bit computing

Tuebingen, Germany, 7 May 2003.
Effective immediately transtec AG, the Tuebingen-based IT system manufacturer, is offering the first servers based on AMD Opteron™. The transtec 1001 and 2500 64-bit servers use the new AMD processor as an ideal starting point for 64-bit computing. They offer the basis for complex and data-intensive business applications, such as databases, business intelligence, data warehouse and server applications.

"The AMD Opteron™ processor supports both 32 and 64-bit systems and is, at the same time, the first processor of a new computing class bearing the name of AMD64. The new processors achieve a high 32-bit performance and provide transtec customers with a simplified migration path to 64-bit computing performance," according to Winfried Reiser, Vice President of the Microsoft and Unix/Linux Business Unit at transtec AG. The AMD Opteron™ processor is the first processor to support both 32 and 64-bit applications and operating systems at the same time and with an exceptional performance, thus allowing a gradual conversion to 64-bit operating systems and applications. The 64-bit hardware is supported by the 64-bit version of the Suse Linux Enterprise Server operating system for the AMD Opteron™ processor. The transtec 1001 64-bit server is ideal for use in high-performance clustering applications due to its low height of only one height unit (1 U). In contrast, the transtec 2500 64-bit server is presented in a tower enclosure, which can easily be converted into a 4-U rackmount enclosure by means of an optional rackmount kit.
